One herbal remedy for boosting your family’s immune systems is by using elderberries to make syrup and or gummies. The syrup and gummies are easy to make, plus you will have them on hand when needed instead of having to run to the store. Various stores do carry elderberry gummies and syrup, however beware most contain synthetic ingredients and processed sugars.

As Mamas we know we have no time to get sick and when we do we need to get better quick to take care of our family. When our kiddos get sick we try to do every trick in the book to help them feel better and now you can add Elderberry syrup and gummies to your arsenal of remedies.

How do Elderberries help?

Elderberries are antioxidants and have extremely high levels of vitamins C, B, and A. These vitamins and antioxidants have been shown to increase healing so you can kick your sickness faster!

Studies have been shown those taking Elderberry Syrup saw rapid healing time from the flu up to four days sooner. In 1995, during the Panama flu epidemic, elderberry was used and its efficacy has been studied.

Ingredients needed:

-Mamas Blooming Organic Elderberry Ingredients purchased here

-Distilled Water

-Raw Unfiltered Honey (other honey is processed) or Organic Maple Syrup if under the age of 12 months

If you are making gummies you will also need:

Unflavored Gelatin (grass fed, kosher, non-GMO)

1. Pour all of the Mamas Blooming Organic Elderberry ingredients into a saucepan

2. Next add 3 cups of distilled water to the saucepan (tap water contains bacteria and your syrup will not last as long)

3. Simmer covered for approximately 20-30 minutes

4. Carefully use a strainer to strain the syrup into a bowl, jar, or another pan (if making gummies I recommend straining the syrup into another saucepan)

5. Add 1 cup of raw unfiltered honey (if your child is younger than 12 months you can use organic maple syrup instead) Carefully stir until honey is completely mixed (if you are making gummies move onto step 6) Store in a glass mason jar in the fridge. Syrup should be good for 3 months or more. IF YOU ARE MAKING GUMMIES KEEP READING (you can also half the syrup and then you will have syrup and gummies)

6. While the syrup mixture is still warm take about a cup of the mixture out and mix in 6 tablespoons of gelatin. If you are making syrup and gummies then only mix in 3 tablespoons of Gelatin. Stir and stir some more. Next pour the gelatin mixture into the syrup you still have in the saucepan. Make sure you keep the syrup on low to keep the mixture from becoming too thick while you are filling the molds.

7. You are now ready to use your dropper to fill your silicone gummy bear trays. After your trays are filled you can either place them in the fridge to cool or in the freezer (faster). TIP: I like to put my gummy bear trays on cookie sheets to make them easier to transfer in and out of the fridge and freezer

8. Carefully remove your gummies and store in mason jars in the fridge.

Recommendations (I am not an herbalist or naturopath) on how often and how much can vary depending on the source. The standard does seems to be ½ tsp to 1 tsp. for children and 1 Tbsp. for adults. When you feel like you are getting sick double your dose and take every 2-3 hours.

Some people like to take the syrup or gummies during the week as a preventative or just when they have been exposed to a sickness or when they feel like they are getting sick. Use your judgment and your own research and take as often as you feel comfortable.
